I'd like to share this great DVD I got at Christmas, called
CALLE 54. Produced and directed by Fernando Trueba, this film shows some of the best Latin music performances I've ever scene. The bonus is great sound and picture !
Here are some of the musicians:
1) Michel Camillo with Anthony Jackson and Horacio Hernandez.
2) Brazil's Eliane Elias & Trio
3) The late Tito Puente with great band featuring El negro and Giovanni Hidalgo !
4) Potato Valdez .
5) Paquito D'Rivera with one of the greatest latin bands I've ever seen!
6) Chucho Valdez.
Plus many more...
Take a look at
http://www.calle54film.com
and get the picture !
Anyone else on this board have this DVD ? If so, what are your impressions ?

Hey Groovissimo!
Thanks for the link. Although I'm still at the library I will be sure to check out this link as soon as I am home. In the past days I was seriously considering getting into latin music a little more than I have done in the past. Hopfully this is a place to start! Take care,

Suspiria,
Even though this DVD is not a course in Latin Jazz, it's a great work of art showing the history of this music, by going through different cultures.
There is even a segment by pianist Chano Dominguez showing the fusion between Latin jazz and Flamenco singing and dancing!
A "Must" DVD for those who want the "Real" thing !

Wow, the previews look good. Thanks for the tip. This looks to be "the shit" as Luis would say.

I saw that Camilo trio live at the Blue Note NYC a couple years back. I got to sit three fett away from Negro's left foot. It was an amazing night of music. Ya'll should check out the Live CD. Different bass player, but great none the less.

great film,very enlighting.
i've always loved Michel Camilo especially the "one more once" album that i've listened to continuously
for more than a year a while ago.
it's basically old songs of his played with an amazing latin jazz big band including the scariest horn section since tower of power's .
cliff almond is totally at ease with those sometimes complicated stuff and Anthony Jackson is just....
awesome as usual and acts as the perfect link between those cats.
definitely a must have whether you're a drummer, bassist, keyboardist or whatever.

Hey Groovissimo. That link looks very promising indeed. Once again I'm at the library and would much prefer to start downloading things. I'll check this out soon!
(Notice what a great distraction this board offers when I try to get some work done...)
